چکیده
Environmental heat exposure can cause illness, injury, and death. This report describes four heat-related deaths that occurred in the United States during 1997 and summarizes risk factors for and reviews measures to prevent heat-related illness, injury, and death.

Changing heat-related mortality in the United States.
Heat is the primary weather-related cause of death in the United States. Increasing heat and humidity, at least partially related to anthropogenic climate change, suggest that a long-term increase in heat-related mortality could occur. We calculated the annual excess mortality on days when apparent temperatures--an index that combines air temperature and humidity--exceeded a threshold value for...
متن کاملHeat-related deaths--Philadelphia and United States, 1993-1994.
During June 1994, temperatures across the United States were higher than usual. Since June 13, record high temperatures (above 90 F [32.2 C]) with humidities of 50%-60% have occurred in the northeastern United States (1). During July 1-14, 1993, the eastern United States also experienced a severe heat wave with high temperatures (93 F-101 F [33.9 C-38.3 C]) and high humidity (36%-58%) (2). Duri...
متن کاملHeat-related deaths--Los Angeles County, California, 1999-2000, and United States, 1979-1998.
Heat-related deaths typically occur during summer months. Many of these deaths are preventable. This report describes four cases of heat-related deaths in Los Angeles County, California, during 1999-2000, compares age-, sex-, and race-specific rates in Los Angeles County and the United States during 1979-1998, and summarizes trends in the United States during 1979-1998. Relatives, neighbors, an...
متن کاملEstimation and Uncertainty Analysis of Impacts of Future Heat Waves on Mortality in the Eastern United States
BACKGROUND Climate change is anticipated to influence heat-related mortality in the future. However, estimates of excess mortality attributable to future heat waves are subject to large uncertainties and have not been projected under the latest greenhouse gas emission scenarios. OBJECTIVES We estimated future heat wave mortality in the eastern United States (approximately 1,700 counties) unde...
متن کاملHeat-wave-related mortality--Milwaukee, Wisconsin, July 1995.
During July 12-15, 1995, a heat wave occurred in major portions of the midwestern and eastern United States. Record-high temperatures were recorded at approximately 70 locations, ranging from the central and northern Great Plains to the Atlantic coast and caused substantial numbers of heat-related illnesses and deaths in some locations. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1994 estimated population: 938,11...
